World Cup Postcript

I promised a hiatus & there it was; a month-long one. All the stuff that I’d not done due to watching football could no longer be ignored, so the blog took a hit to the disappointment, I’m sure, of my vast readership.

Anyway, as you will know the World Cup is done and dusted; Italy won & were generally considered to be the best team although Zinedine Zidane helped them immensely with a now infamous moment of madness. England were bloody awful, predictably bombing out in the quarter-finals on penalties - again.

In fact because it was again, it wasn’t much of a big deal for most people & even though there was a predictable search for a scapegoat the consensus was more realistic.

So that it’s for another 4 years & although there was a bit too much play-acting & feigning injury from the players I’ll see you in 2010.

Pleasantly enough I actually watched the final in a pub in Shaldon, Devon, as I was attending a wedding down there. All along the coast is picture-postcard & the nearby Dartmoor is as impressive as I’d heard with wild, open spaces & secluded forested river valleys as well as feral ponies in the road. Check out lunch at the Badger’s Holt for tea & scones with what must be the thickest clotted cream anywhere!
